Abstract

In this paper, I will explain that while the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus was
in its early stages in the southern Palestinian side, (Gaza Strip) has been
particularly exposed to its effects - for various reasons. One of the most
crucial reasons is the continuation of Israel and the blockade imposed on
Gaza from all sides. With the economy at a standstill, the PA (Palestinian
Authority) has limited financial resources to (re)build sanitation and hygiene
facilities, waste treatment, and water supply infrastructure. Although these
shortcomings (in infrastructure) were already a public health concern before
the outbreak of the pandemic, they now make Gaza particularly vulnerable
to the spread of viruses and diseases (WHO article). In addition, the limited
movement of goods due to the blockade has led to a severe shortage of
supplies and medical equipment necessary to face the epidemic. However,
the widespread outbreak of COVID-19 also reveals the development,
economic and labor market challenges Gaza faces because of the conflict. In
conclusion, on the other hand, the pandemic has become an opportunity for
the donor community, to address some of the consequences of the conflict
and blockade without having to face the ensuing political consequences.
